Saturday hoops

Monday, November 29th, 2010

After cleaning up around the Green House on Saturday, some of the guys were shooting on the court out back. I’m not sure who had the brilliant idea to try a shot from the half-finished shed at the edge of the court, but it turned into a little contest. Sasean had the most makes when I left (no makes for me or little Isaiah).

Steve’s weekly note, Nov. 25

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Everyone,

On this day of Thanksgiving it would be wrong if I didn’t pause to acknowledge how fortunate I am to be part of the Green House community, and how fortunate I am to know and spend time with all of you, and with all of our kids! The positive effects these relationships have had on my life can not be overstated,

Last Saturday Denise, with lots of help from Pat, led an activity for the kids that involved each of them making a personalized Christmas stocking. Everyone enjoyed themselves and there were at least thirty stockings made by the time lunch was served. And speaking of lunch, Jessica and Husky Nutrition provided the food and cooked a great meal of baked ziti with home made sauce and salad and garlic bread that was enjoyed by at least forty-five volunteers and kids.

This Saturday the Green House will be closed except for any of our high school, or older kids, who want to WORK with me on various upkeep items and chores.

Don’t forget the Christmas party will be on December 18, 2010 in Voluntown. …

How exciting has it been to see two of our Husky Sport friends, Kemba and Maya, off to such great starts in their basketball seasons? I guess just like with the football team, we can’t take too much credit but, hey, facts are facts.

See you soon,

Steve

The art of a Green House Saturday

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Anyone who’s stopped in on a Saturday will know there’s a frenzy of activity at the Green House. While there’s no way to capture all that happens (or to mediate the various basketball rules interpretations) in this space, here is a sampling of the activity on Nov. 20.

To the left, is an original drawing by Dwight. He said it is an “Elemental Phoenix,” which knows the basic elements of the periodic table. The Phoenix can identify them by touch and break them down by atom for use in making new land or planets. (I’m paraphrasing, and Dwight can correct any mistakes I’ve made if you ask him.)

Fun Questions To Ask
(name suggested by interview subject Malik)

How was school this week?

Malik: Good. I love math and I love computers.

What was the most fun thing you did this week?

Malik: Hanging with my best friends. We played lots of games. We found this one code for Math Star Fall.

What do you play at recess?

Malik: I play football. It’s kind of like every man for himself.

What are you thankful for?

Malik: My brothers, my mom and dad and dog. My baseball team.

Is it fun to play with your brothers, or do you fight?

Malik: Sometimes you play, sometimes you fight.

Malik aside after we finish the interview: I’ve got a finger that’s made out of Play Doh.
